Speaking the Same Language: How Architects Communicate Space Across Disciplines & Why It Matters for Design Practice
Join us for Architectural Manufacturing Research Network_ Lecture Series 02 with Ayumi Mukai, architect and PhD candidate from Keio University. This lecture series is part of a collaborative initiative between ARC Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing (Arch_Manu), Architectural Informatics Society (AIS), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU).
Talk title: Speaking the Same Language: How Architects Communicate Space Across Disciplines & Why It Matters for Design Practice
Abstract: Architectural design relies on language as much as on drawings and models, but do we all mean the same thing when we talk about space? This lecture examines how common architectural terms take on different meanings across disciplines and between experts and non-experts, drawing on an analysis of Japanese architectural texts published between 2008 and 2023.
We will explore why these variations occur and how they can lead to misunderstandings, even among professionals, impacting collaboration and design outcomes. By making these differences visible, the session offers practical strategies for architects to develop clearer, shared ways of communicating spatial concepts. Attendees will gain insights into improving interdisciplinary dialogue and learn simple steps to enhance clarity in everyday practice, fostering better coordination and more effective design processes.
